10 Amazon Must Haves that Actually Matter for Counselors, Therapists, and Special Educators.

As professionals in the fields of counseling, social work, and special education, we understand the importance of equipping ourselves with the practical tools that can facilitate open conversations, promote emotional regulations, and create a comfortable space for individuals to share experiences.

As an educator, summer always had me doing and "inventory" of such on my stash of resources and things to plan for what needed to be refreshed or purged. There were always those "must-haves" each year that I ensured made it on the top of the list. I wanted to highlight some of those that have proven to be invaluable assets in my journey of helping others. These are budget-friendly tools that have stood the test of time and are seen effective with tweens, teens, and adults.

1. Portable Ice Maker

Ok...this is the pricer one on the list but it's SO WORTH it! I've had this in my classroom/office for a few years now and it is my GO-TO strategy when someone comes in escalated. Offering a cup of ice or a drink works wonders on calming the nervous system and getting them to a more rationale place.

If using this in a school environment, I would recommend setting some expectations for health and safety as well use when you are not there. It can become popular quick and you don't want it to cause any unnecessary problems. It is SELF-CLEANING which is another reason I love it!

2. Mini Composition Notebooks

I love having these on hand to give to those needing an outlet. Whether it's to draw, doodle, journal, list, whatever.....they work well without any pressure. I like these because they are neutral and for everyone, but there are many options available. My students always loved freebies and these are a great way to start building that relationship. Working mainly with teens, sneaking in positive habits takes creativity😀 They would always pop in to show me what they had created or written and it is a great tool to start sessions or reference when working with them.

3. Sensory Strips

You get 50 strips for $10 so....WHY NOT? These can be placed anywhere but I have used them on devices, tables/desks, journals, water bottles. I personally use them when I am stuck on intrusive thoughts or when trying to stay focused on a project. They are also useful for those that struggle with skin picking and nail biting, Having a visual reminders is another reason I prefer these over some of the others. Our brains need that prompt to practice a calming strategy and these are PERFECT for that!

4. Magnetic Ring Fidget

Yes...I said it...fidgets. However, this pack of 9 rings is great to have when you or someone else needs to re-gain focus, regulate emotions, or for a distraction or brain break. I use these all the time but one way I found them to work great is when you want to model using a coping strategy. You start fidgeting with them, they ask to see one, next thing you know they are calm and sharing. In a classroom I like them as an option because they are not really throwable or easy to take a part and they barely make any noise.

5. Stickers, Stickers, and More Stickers

These still seem to be a HIT with all ages. I personally like the stickers with motivational messages or mental health awareness topics. Mainly because I find them to be good conversation starters as well as reminders and reinforcement of habits and skills. Although there is an extensive amount of options available like memes and sports so you can find what represents your audience best.

One of my toxic teacher traits was I would "accidentally" knock over the sticker basket. Everybody wants to help with that clean up and you get to talk about stuff while doing it. Awesome Sauce!!

Here are some of my favs

Motivational Get Them Here

6. Mental Health Matters T-Shirt

REPRESENTATION MATTERS. Since the pandemic, I've adopted a wardrobe of message tees, jeans, and Vans. Some people would cringe at that however, according to students and clients I've polled, their learning outcomes are not dependent on my outfit choices. 😎 Relatable is preferred

and the stigma is real so being able to openly talk about it takes a certain level of comfort. Especially in the LGBTQ+ community due to their safety being at risk in the state I reside. I also did Instacart one summer in which I got compliments on my message tees that sparked conversations around diverse topics.

I always love a soft heather grey tee but there are a variety of options available. The print is colorful and fun and only $16.99

7. Safe Space Door Sign

Again...REPRESENTATION MATTERS.

Now more than ever, safe spaces need to be designated and easy to identify and access. In my experience, having an EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE type of message posted makes people feel more comfortable than uncomfortable. Duh😀 Students would walk by my classroom and office, snooping, then mention the sign and ask if they could come in.

I found this new one that is VERY INCLUSIVE and am excited to put it up. Again...such great conversation starters that make others feel safe and valued and can also combat ignorance.

8. Decor with a Purpose

During the last 20 years I went through different phases of decor for my classroom and office. Some better than others obviously. I've landed on a few themes that I feel work best and have the most impact.

  • relevance to topics or concepts you instruct on

  • easily readable with text and graphics

  • reference them often

  • Keep them simple

  • have them in spaces with heavy traffic

Great for sparking conversation with ANYONE! Seriously...I've seen students/clients educate a family member or friend on a concept from one of these posters.

They are great because there are like 45 to choose from and the graphics are creative and neutral.

I have this one in my home office and LOVE IT!

SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST!

9 & 10. Kinetic Sand with Tray and Tools

Let me just say that EVERYONE should have Kinetic Sand around!! Tried and true strategy for over a decade. Just a few minutes with the sand turns into play therapy or a talk session every time! Kids, teens, and adults! Lots of exclamations here but for good reason. All I can say is....just try it and you'll see for yourself. So satisfying too.

These are the tools that I found to be most popular and the tray is a necessity to keep it all organized and contained. Nothing fancy needed. Go get some cheap trays from the dollar store to use when dividing it up.

I also recommend the use of a Journaling Practice. Writing can be a powerful therapeutic tool. They provide a structured framework for journaling and self-reflection. I created these journals using evidence-based practices and exercises that promote self-compassion, resilience, and emotional healing. Therapists and counselors can recommend these as a resource to support personal growth outside of sessions. Great in a education setting also.
